What can bonding do?

Dental bonding can cover or repair many minor imperfections, such as stains that don’t respond to teeth whitening, dents, or chips. Bonding can also lengthen or widen certain teeth, effectively filling small gaps and creating a more even, uniform appearance. You may choose bonding for one or many teeth. During your consultation, Dr. Eshom will ask which aspects of your smile you would like to change and suggest the most effective, conservative way to achieve the results you seek.

This minimally invasive procedure provides a convenient solution to many minor cosmetic dental issues; it is inexpensive, painless, and delivers immediate results. Bonding can even reduce your teeth’s susceptibility to tooth decay by smoothing any irregular surfaces where plaque and bacteria tend to accumulate.

How is dental bonding performed?

During the procedure, we sculpt composite resin over each tooth to create a new surface. We use the same strong and durable resin for dental fillings. It is also tinted to match the natural color and translucency of your teeth for a seamless blend. After carefully applying the resin to your tooth, a special curing light will permanently harden it. Dr. Eshom then smooths the edges to ensure the bonding feels comfortable in your mouth. Finally, he polishes the new surfaces for a sensational finish.

You can also combine dental bonding with contouring, a procedure that removes very small amounts of enamel to alter the shape and outline of a tooth. For example, patients with pointed canines often opt to smooth away pointed edges with dental contouring. Together, bonding and contouring can both take away from and add to your smile until it achieves the ideal appearance.

Treat your bonded teeth like your natural teeth. Brush them twice a day, floss once, and visit our office every six months for dental cleanings and check-ups. Your new bonded teeth will look beautiful initially, but remember that composite resin can stain just like natural enamel, from coffee, tea, tobacco products, and foods containing dark pigments. Since natural enamel stains faster than bonding, periodically whitening non-bonded teeth will help keep your smile bright.

Bonding vs. Veneers

Veneers are stronger and more durable than bonding, but that doesn’t make bonding a lesser choice. If you take good care of your teeth and use them only for eating, bonding can give your smile a fresh, even, and balanced appearance. Porcelain veneers are stronger, but both options can positively impact your smile. Bonding also takes less time to complete and is available at a much lower cost.
