Brush and Floss Daily

San Diego dentist, Dr. Eshom, recommends daily flossing and brushing to minimize the bacterial deposits that cause cavities and gum disease. Brushing and flossing your teeth are one of the most effective ways to remove plaque build-up from your teeth. If plaque is not removed thoroughly each day, in just 48 hours it can harden into insoluble tartar, which can only be removed with professional dental tools.

All dentists will agree that a gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush is more effective and less damaging to the surrounding gums.

  • Brush for two minutes, twice a day, using a combination of gentle, repeated movements. Grip the toothbrush in a variety of angles to allow you access to all the surfaces of your teeth.
  • Floss once per day to remove plaque and food particles. Gently thread floss between teeth and use an up-and-down movement to clean the inner surfaces of the teeth. Don’t forget to floss gently into the C-curve just under the edge of the gum line.

Make daily brushing and flossing with the proper techniques your habit, and you’ll be rewarded with a cleaner, healthier smile.

Use Fluoride

Fluoride is a common mineral found in the water we drink and the food we eat. Fluoride is an excellent substance that helps prevent cavity-causing decay. It is absorbed by your body and used by the cells that build your teeth to create a stronger tooth structure.

We always recommend fluoride treatment or fluoride toothpaste as a preventative tool for your dental health. For more information about prevention ask our hygienist and San Diego Dentist, Dr. David S. Eshom.

Dental Sealants

General dentistry in San Diego - saving smiles with sealants tooth illustrationWhile commonly used on baby molars, dental sealants are not just for children. Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting teeth against decay-causing bacteria, and can be safely used on teeth of all ages. Sealants are most effective on molars, which have deep ridges on the chewing surface, where bacteria like to hide. It can be extremely difficult cleaning these surfaces thoroughly with a toothbrush, and that’s why many people have cavities in their back teeth. With sealants you can avoid this common spot for cavities and will rest easy knowing the deep ridges of your teeth are protected from the microscopic bacteria that cause cavities.

Before applying the sealant, Dr. Eshom will pre-treat the crevices of your teeth with our laser to disinfect the grooves of your teeth. This will enhance the bonding of the sealant, as well as its longevity. He will then apply the sealant to the teeth, which will dry in a matter of minutes, and protect your teeth for years.
