Why You’re Going to Love Clear, Removable Braces

Woman wearing clear, removable alignerDo you suffer from a misaligned smile? Are your teeth crowded or crooked? Do you wish you could fix the problem without spending two years or more wearing unsightly metal brackets and wires on your teeth? Dr. David Eshom can offer you clear, removable braces that will fix your smile quickly and comfortably, with fewer office visits than traditional braces.

The Invisalign® system involves patients wearing a succession of clear acrylic aligners that gently move their teeth into the correct position. Patients wear 20 to 30 sets of the aligners, for two weeks each, over the course of about 12 to 18 months. The system involves no brackets, wires, or bands, and the doctor can tailor the system to adults or teens.

The Comfortable Option

Anyone who has worn traditional braces can recount horror stories of the pain they suffered through for the duration of their treatment. Attending monthly visits to the orthodontist to have the wires tightened on their braces became a source of nightmares. Often after these appointments, the teeth would feel so tender that the patient could only eat soup for a few days after.

Patients also had to worry about injuries caused by wires. If a wire came loose from the brackets or had a sharp edge sticking out, the patient could count on the inside of their lips and cheeks receiving several cuts and scratches.

Invisalign® clear aligners have no wires, meaning the patient will not have to suffer through tightening appointments. The aligners use a gentle pressure to move the teeth, preventing teeth from becoming too sensitive. The aligners have no sharp edges, which means patients need not worry about cutting the inside of their mouth.

Quick Treatment

Traditional bracket and wire braces typically require a minimum of two years to move teeth into alignment. Patients often wear them even longer than that to ensure proper placement.

Treatment with Invisalign® can take as little as 12 months. The average patient’s treatment time falls between that and 18 months, making the treatment much less time consuming than traditional braces. As long as patients follow their treatment plan and wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day, they will finish their treatment in record time.

Removable Aligners

Traditional braces place restrictions on what foods the patient can enjoy. Popcorn, caramel, apples, and corn on the cob are all forbidden, because they may get stuck in between brackets or pull a bracket loose.

Additionally, bracket and wire braces have areas that most patients have a hard time reaching with their toothbrush. This means the patient’s teeth do not get as clean as they should, which can lead to cavities, gum disease, and discoloration. Patients whose teeth become discolored because they cannot reach certain spots have an extra problem, because the portion of the teeth under the brackets will remain the same shade it was when the braces were first installed.

Invisalign® patients can remove their aligners for eating and cleaning their teeth. This means they can enjoy any foods they want, without worrying that they will adversely affect the treatment. This also allows patients easy access to their teeth for cleaning. While patients do need to ensure they keep the aligners in for 20 to 22 hours, they can remove them for special occasions, when they want the most natural look possible.

Virtual Invisibility

If you were to ask the average adult for their biggest concern about wearing traditional braces, most of them would talk about the appearance. Nobody wants to have a mouth full of metal brackets and wires. Many adults feel that this look makes them appear childish, and takes away from their professional appearance.

Invisalign® aligners remove this concern. The clear aligners appear virtually invisible when worn, and do not affect the patient’s professional look at all. In fact, most Invisalign® patients can go through treatment without anyone knowing other than Dr. Eshom.
